Me Driving Potato Truck For the 2004 Harvest

I'd like to start off my TTT Career by introducing myself. Many of you may already know me, but for those of you that don't, my name is Dave Desjardins and i'm from a potato farming family in Northern Maine. I'm currently not on the farm anymore, as I moved south for college and now I work down here, but I get back to my roots often. Last fall I took a week off of work and worked Potato Harvest....my colleagues called me crazy, but hey, you can take the boy out of farm but you cant take the farm out of the boy! I've been using Toy Tractor Talk for a while now and go by Spudland_Dave.

Its truly a pleasure to be able to write for a fine publication such as this and I hope I can help people with trucks and their collections or displays.

By now you guys must be wondering what I'm gonna talk about in my future articles. I would like to focus and highlight trucks in the various farm toy scales, 1/64, 1/32 and 1/16. I'd like to keep you in the loop of what's new, what's on the horizon and what would work in our farm related collections, The differences between the farm toy market & the toy truck market. A brief look at the offerings of current trucks will show that there are PLENTY of flashy "show trucks" but there are many other trucks which can be used for farming and farm related displays. From time to time, depending on the season, I'll talk about Potato farming as it is my true love.

Lets Get Down To Business!

This time of year is a hot time for the toy truck industry. First Gear has recently come into the fray of 1/64th manufacturers and has made quite the splash. Watch next month for a complete review of the First Gear trucks.

Many announcements of totally new & upcoming products have been made in recent times, some of these items include:

  • DCP Kenworth W900 in various cab configurations
  • DCP Transcraft Eagle Step Deck Flatbed
  • DCP Brenner Chemical Tanker (See coming soon section)
  • DCP Brenner Sanitary Grade Tanker (See coming soon section)
  • Tonkin/PEM Kenworth T800 Dump Truck

As you may know, the Toy Trucker & Contractor truck this year will be the new Kenworth W900 with the new Step Deck hauling a corrugated pipe load for Pacific Corrugated Pipe Company: http://www.pac-corr-pipe.com/index.shtml

Tonkin/PEM Kenworth T800
**NOTE** This is a pre-production photo. Subject to change.

Keith Bradley of Midwest Replicas was instrumental in making the T800 from PEM/Tonkin happen, the first release of this truck will be a Dump Truck...which has been sorely needed in the 1/64th world.

Marketplace

Every month I will include this marketplace section, which will highlight models in the marketplace. Items in the currently shipping section are exactly that....shipping. Items in the coming soon are items that are done, but might not yet be in the retailers hands yet. But would be available for pre-ordering & reserving. Many times trucks sell out before they are even shipping.

Currently Shipping:
Penjoy: Collector Club Truck & Walinga Trailer

Every year Penjoy offers a special truck only to its collector club members. For 2005 the truck is a Mack CH Daycab with a load of building materials & a self loader. 1 Years membership which includes the truck, 4 Quarterly issues of the Penjoy Collectible which is in FULL Color and highlights new and upcoming Penjoy trucks. AND special pricing on all Penjoy products...typically you save 5-10.00 per truck just by being in the club! All for only $45.00 a year. A must have for any truck lover. For joining information visit Penjoy at www.penjoy.com

For the farm collector, Penjoy has released a Walinga feed trailer. Judging from the pictures, it looks to be a beautiful trailer. This truck comes with a Mack CH series truck with a Large Airfoil. The trailer is decaled for Walinga's 50th Anniversary which was in 2004.

As a side note, In future issues i'd like to publish a full review of the item whenever possible. I have neither of these trucks so all technical comments are from feedback I've gotten from other customers.

Coming Soon:
DCP 30723 - Brenner Chemical Tanker
DCP 30724 - Brenner Sanitary Tanker

DCP has announced 2 new tank trailers, a Brenner Chemical Tanker and a Brenner Sanitary Tanker. Both tankers feature free rolling wheels, suspension, stainless steel tank & die cast construction, and adjustable jack stands. Both should be be available in early April from stores such as Jaydeez.com

For those of you lucky enough to attend the St. Louis show, you might have seen these new tankers at the Midwest Replica's booth. Keith had a production sample of each one on display.

It will be exciting to see what else we will get down the road in terms of company printed tankers.
