The National Farm Toy Show will be held once again on the first weekend in November in Dyersville, Iowa, the farm toy capitol of the world. “The Big Show” was founded in 1978 by Claire and Cathy Scheibe, owners of the Toy Farmer magazine, to draw farm toy collectors together throughout the country. This year marks the 28th National Farm Toy Show where collectors and toy manufacturers will descend on Dyersville, Iowa to celebrate the hobby.
Back in 1978, Toy Farmer decided to offer a show tractor to help commemorate the National Farm Toy Show. That first tractor was an International 560 made by the Ertl Company especially for the show. Ertl and the Toy Farmer have teamed together for the past 28 years to offer the National Farm Toy Show tractor. For the first 25 years, Toy Farmer offered 1/16 tractors from every major brand and manufacturer. In 2002, the 25th anniversary tractor was an Oliver 1950-T tractor and was the last brand not offered at previous nationals.
In 2003, Toy Farmer decided to kick off the next 25 years of National Farm Toy Show tractors with a new theme and a new scale. Toy Farmer wanted to give collectors a chance to start anew with the show tractor line and introduced a new series of 1/32 scale classic 4wd tractors. The first tractor in the 1/32 series was the popular 1971 John Deere 7020. The John Deere was followed in 2004 by the Massey Ferguson 1500 4wd. Collectors have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of the 2005 NFTS tractor since last November and now the long wait is over.
Toy Farmer’s 2005 NFTS show tractor will be a 1971 Oliver 2655 4wd. Ertl will once again produce this 1/32 replica with even more detail than before. The new Ertl model features a clear glass windowed cab, highly detailed Minneapolis Moline 585 cubic inch engine, dual wheels, and a 3 point hitch.
Oliver manufactured the 2655 in 1971 and 1972 and sold the tractor through 1973. The Oliver 2655 4wd articulated frame tractor was the largest model in the Oliver line. It was rated at 143 PTO horse power with a deisel engine and 135 PTO horse power with the LP gas engine. It was manufactured by Minneapolis Moline along with their A4T1600 4WD.
The 2655 utilized a two piece frame with the front frame moving 44 degrees to the left or right for steering. The rear axel was mounted solidly to the rear frame, but the front axel was able to oscillate 15 degrees either way within the front frame. The wheel tread was adjustable from 76 to 96 inches to match row spacing.
The 6 cylinder Minneapolis Moline diesel engine had a 4.75 x 5.50 inch bore and stroke for displacement of 585 cubic inches. The rated engine speed was 2200 RPM. The five speed transmission was combined with a 2 speed transfer case to provide 10 forward speeds and 2 in reverse. With 18.4-34 tires, the travel speeds ranged from 2 to 11 miles per hour in the low range and 4 to 22 miles per hour in the high range. The independent PTO had a speed of 1000 RPM.
An open center hydraulic system which provided 2 or 3 valves for the operation of remote cylinders was standard equipment. A close center hydraulic system with a 3 pt hitch for category for 2 or 3 implements was optional. An isolated self-contained capsule cab was standard equipment to reduce the noise level to 8.75 DBA during the Nebraska test.
The new 1/32 and companion 1/64 Oliver 2655 4WD from the Toy Farmer and Ertl will surely be a hit. Order forms will be available from Toy Farmer soon and the tractors will be distributed during the 2005 NFTS.
