Racin’ Farmers
By Stefanie Martin

Crestan and Johnathan Williams are cousins with a passion for both race cars and tractors. They tied their interests together by building an exciting display for the 2005 St. Louis Farm Toy Show Jr. display division. This display shows the race against the fall corn harvest and the excitement at the local race track.

Looking at the Williams cousins’ display was like looking at the real countryside. They have combined the excitement of a Friday night race with the endurance race of harvesting. Viewers see a lifelike race track complete with race cars, fans, traffic and support vehicles. Under the big lights of the track the cars cruise around a well constructed, embanked course. The fans have bleachers to sit in while watching the action of both the track and the infield. This unique dual set up is enhanced by sculpted three dimensional landscaping and sloped ridges.

Across from the busy track a farmer races to harvest his corn. The cousins did an excellent job in laying out a 1/64 corn field. A John Deere Maximizer Combine is opening up the field next to the home farm. To race fans, this may seem like a slow process, but the farmer is hurriedly shelling his crop. Just like the race track, the harvest is a team effort. In the pits are a dump truck and John Deere tractor hauling a gravity wagon to keep the combine running at full speed. This field was well laid out with harvested head lands that curve around the field’s perimeter. Now the combine is working the in field opening up the corn field for harvest.

These cousins are off to a great race in display building in the Jr. division, and it will be nice to see them in years to come as they complete their laps moving on to the adult division of competition. Their sculpting and building talents make them a hands down winners in the farm toy hobby.
