The Farmall M
My dad is always talking about the Farmall M they had on the farm. He says it was his favorite tractor.
There were many different models of the M and Ertl did a good job with their replicas. Ertl produced 4 sets of three tractors each. The 1st set included two M’s, a narrow front end (NFE) tractor, a wide front end (WFE) and a high crop MV.

Set two consists of a NFE and a WFE Super M, and a Super MV high crop.

Set three has three MD models. A NFE MD, a WFE Super MD and a Super MDV high crop.

Set four is the last set. There are three M’s in this set. The 1st is the white M. The 2nd is the 1,000,000th M and the 3rd M has white stripes on the grill.

There are many more M’s to be found outside of those in the sets. A 2nd NFE Super M can be found that differs from the model in set two. The model in set two has a spring under the seat while the models outside the set do not. Ertl also produced two tricycle models. An M and a Super MD both have the single front wheel.

The next five models are special edition variations. The 1st is an M that was produced for the Iowa FFA in 1996. The only feature that makes this tractor different from the M in set one is the FFA stamp on the side of the tractor.

The National Farm Toy Museum (NFTM) also cashed in on the popularity of the Farmall M. In 1998 and 2001 a WFE model M and an MV high crop have the letters NFTM and the date on the body of the tractors.

The last two tractors aren't too popular with many collectors. These are both chrome gold models. The first gold M variation comes in a special millennium farm classics set. The tractors in this set are all gold. The M has black stacks, steering wheel and rear axle rivets. The other gold model is a Christmas ornament. This model is all gold and comes with a snowflake ornament.

Some of these tractors have unique features on them. The FFA model and the MD tricycle model are the only two models without a painted breather. These two have red molded plastic breathers. The rest are molded in black and painted red. The MV in set one is a McCormick Deering Farmall. The MV for 2001 NFTM is a McCormick Farmall. The 1,000,000 M in set four is the only McCormick Farmall M. All others are McCormick Deering Farmalls. I mentioned above that the M has two seat variations. There are actually a total of three seat variations.

One has no spring, one has a small spring and the other has a spring sitting above a large base.
There are also two engine variations, a gas engine and a diesel engine.

The gold M in the classic set is the only model with a diesel engine and no diesel printed on the side of the tractor. The last feature to look at is a mistake on the 2001 NFTM tractor. This high crop tractor does not have a high crop hitch.

These are all the variations I am aware of. If you have or know of others please email me. MISTER164@HOTMAIL.COM.
