John Deere 4wd Sets

John Deere 9520 and 1812c Scraper Pans

One of my favorite toys of 2004 is the John Deere 1812c scraper pan set. Ertl has started a new trend in 1/64 4wd collecting for John Deere fans.  They are packing new 1/64 large horse power John Deere implements with John Deere 9020 series 4wds.

The team up styling packaging started with Ertl 2wds in 2001 with the mixing of Ertl tractors and grain carts.  Over the past few years wagons and disks have been a popular boxed set.  Ertl has started mixing new implements and tractor model number variations like the John Deere 8320 and Frontier GC1108 grain cart set. Now the 4wds are getting into the boxed set game.

Ertl surprised us with the announcement of 1/64 1812c scraper pans in the late summer.  Collectors have been asking on Toy Tractor Show.com's Toy Talk for pans since the year 2000.  Here are those long awaited pans in December 2004.   They are teamed up with the 450 hp John Deere 9520.

The 9520  has been on collectors wish list almost as long as the pans.  In October 2001 when Ertl introduced the mid-range 9420, collectors on Toy Talk asked why the 9520 was not offered.  Bill Walters the Farm Toy Manger of RC2/Ertl told collectors on Toy Talk that Ertl had special plans for the 9520.  The answer came in 2004 with a 9520 in the 200th Birthday set and now the 1812c pan set.  The 9520 has a gps beacon cab.  The 9520 in the 1st Production pan set has black windows, although Bill Walters has posted that a clear window 9520 will be available in future runs of the set.

Several people have asked on Toy Talk if the 1812c pans are detachable and interchangeable.  The answer is yes.  Each pan is the same.  You can hook the pans in a train one after another as each one has a rear hitch or they can be pulled individually. Almost any Ertl tractor can hook up to the pans as illustrated in the picture below with Cockshutt 1950T on an 1812c.

The Ertl pans are one solid tool.  They are detailed but do not have an opening for the dirt to enter nor do they raise or lower.  Jeff Moore of Moore's Farm Toys has been tinkering with the pans and has customized them to raise and lower on cylinders.   He installed a set of our Hillco cylinders on one so you can raise or lower it. He cut off rear hitch and is working to make more detailed ones. Next he would like to make set laser towers.  He is also thinking about making moveable front panel. Its not hard to install cylinders on them. If anyone wants to try, we will sell you these cylinders separately. If  you want some cylinders, you can contact Jeff at www.mooresfarmtoys.com.

With out a doubt one of the biggest new 1/64 toys in 2005 will be the John Deere air drill.  This 1/64 toy has been in the works for several years.  The new 1890 drill is a replica of a 42ft John Deere and will be paired with a 1910 commodity cart and 9320 4wd.

Ertl first introduced a 1/64 John Deere 1900 commodity cart in September 2000.  Back then Ertl planned to incorporate the 1900 cart with the tooling used with the John Deere 2200 field cultivator released in may 2001.  These plans changed and the 1900 air cart was orphaned in the Ertl toy line.

Nearly five years of waiting will pay off in February 2005.  Ertl will package the 42ft 1890 air drill with a 1910 commodity cart on a blister card with a clear window 9320.  The 1890 drill is nicely detailed with working hydraulic rams, that allow it fold up for transport.  The 9320 is a great decal variation offering collectors a 375 hp tractor option.
