What is in this Issue?

Toy Times Comments

This issue marks our 12th e-edition of The Toy Tractor Times.  Last March TTT came to you on-line for the first time.  It is our hope that you have enjoyed our farm toy reporting and articles.   Last year we kicked off the new Toy Tractor Times by reporting on new toys shown at the Lafayette Toy Show.  This issue will continue the TTT tradition with a full feature an article on new toys for 2004 on display at Lafayette.

Our main focus this month is the St. Louis Toy Show.  St. Louis's Gateway Toy Show is an exciting toy show with many well known toy dealers and displayers.   The display and scratch built contest is one of the big events at St. Louis.  TTT brings you full coverage of the contest from the youth division to the scratch built models.   I do apologize that it took a few extra days to get this issue out to you.  I wanted to share all of the impressive projects on display in St. Louis and it took a while to get all the pictures uploaded.  You will find many of the pictures super sized over our normal issues for your reading enjoyment.

To update you on the TTT AC 7030,  it has been produced by Ertl and is being shipped state side for distribution in a few weeks.   I have put an updated information page up on the tractor at http://www.toytractortimes.com/2003ttt.htm .  In May we will announce a very special version of the Allis-Chalmers 7030.  I am also hard at work with Bill Walters at Ertl on our next 1970's TTT tractor that will be announced this August.

Next month TTT will take a look at spring activity on the model farm. If you would like to join the TTT author list or share an article please contact  Michael Henry at michaelghenry@yahoo.com.

Do not adjust your computer monitor you are looking at a purple Oliver 1850.   The Toy Tractor Times learned of this unique variation  from well known 1/64 toy builder Dale Matsen at the St. Louis Toy Show.    The purple Oliver is one of those toys you would see and say they never made that.   In fact it was a real tractor.   In 1964 Oliver officially introduced the  new 77 hp 1850 and in 1965, the company had a big roll out.  Oliver painted a special 1850 purple for a nation wide advertising campaign.   Advertisement's promoting the 1850 were published in farm magazines featuring the purple tractor.  The thought was a purple tractor would catch a readers attention over other tractor ads. A farmer would see the purple Oliver and think what is the deal with that tractor?   Seeing a purple tractor would make just about anyone read an ad.  The purple Oliver  toured the country for demonstrations at Oliver dealers.   Dale Matsen who made a 1/64 model of the purple Oliver 1850 refers to it as the "Ladies Oliver".  Wives can be a big factor in a tractor buying decision and it probably did not hurt Oliver's case with farm wives that they had a purple tractor.   You can learn more about Dale Matsen's 1/64 tractors in this issue of TTT.

About The Cover: The St. Louis Toy Show is one of the best known farm toy shows in the country.   Many would say it is second only to the National Farm Toy Show.    This month The Toy Tractor Times will take you on a tour of the 23rd Annual Gateway Mid-America Toy Show held in St. Louis Missouri.  The big draws of the show are the friendly people, wide selection of farm toys and of course the displays and scratch built toys.  Our feature article this month from St. Louis is Tim Grube's seed corn, which placed first in the St. Louis display contest.   You may remember Tim's display from our November 2003 "Back from the Big Show" issue.  During the other big show TTT sat down with Tim to write the full story of the unique and detailed display that is featured on this months cover.
