Matsen Miniature Farms Line Up
Dale Matsen  has been building 1/64 tractors for 20 years.  It all started back  in the 1980's the 1/64 tractor selection was limited to a few 2wd and articulated 4wds.   Dale Matsen decided to try to add more variety to his 1/64 collection.   Dale is probably best known for the 4100 series IH 4wds he has made.  During the 1960's and 70's International made a series of ridged frame four wheel steer 4wds.     Dale has made the Federal yellow 4100 and 4156 Internationals and the IH red 4166 and 4186.   The Federal yellow 4100 was available as an open station model and with a cab.  The 4156 and 4166 came with cabs standard.   The later 4166 and 4186 series had ROPS protection .   Dale has made all of these variations in his years of building.

One line that Dale feels that has been over looked in 1/64 scale is Oliver and Minneapolis-Moline.  Oliver has a strong tractor line that date backs to 1929.   Over the years Dale has met many collectors who have told him their grandfather ran an Oliver 88, dad has a 2255 back in the 70's or we used to have a 2155.   Dale likes variations and it shows with all the IH 4wds he has created in 1/64.  Oliver offered an expanded building project.  The golden era of Oliver started  with the 77 and 88 tractors.  Dale builds narrow and wide front 77 and 88 Olivers.   The Oliver Super 99 was the first big Oliver and Dale has built an ag and industrial wide front version of the 99.  Dale has built the Oliver tractors of the late 1950's including the 770, 880 , 990 and 995.   The 1800 series has offered several options for Dale's talents including the 1800 open station, 1800 with cab, 1855 open station, 1855 with canopy ROPS and the 1855 with cab.   Dale also built the Cockshutt 1850 which is a red Oliver sold in Canada. To round out the Oliver 2wd series Dale built the 1/64 130 hp Oliver 2255 as an open station or full cab model.   The most interesting Oliver Dale has made is the purple 1850 demonstrator that was featured on this month's TTT index page.

Minneapolis-Moline is another area Dale has heard many people say  "I would really like to see more Moline's in 1/64".  Dale has made a G-950, G-955 with cab, canopy and open station, G-1050 open station, with cab or canopy, G-1355.

Dale has also built the original White 4wds including the Minneapolis-Moline A4T-1600 open station, with a cab and even an LP version.   From the Minneapolis-Moline 4wd body Dale has also been able to create the Oliver 2455 and 2655 versions of the A4-T 4wd.

Allis-Chalmers big tractors of the late 1960's and early 1970's have been over looked but not by Dale Matsen.  Dale has built four versions of the AC 190 with an open station version, canopy ROPs, narrow front row crop, and a cab model.   The other big AC's Dale has brought to 1/64 is the 200 and D-21.

The other brand Dale has built to fill in his collection the 30 series Case tractors of the 1960's.  Dale has made several versions of the Case 700 and 800 Case-O-Matic tractors with wide front, narrow front, Black-Knight demonstrator colors and even mounted corn picker versions.   These models were followed by 730 and 830 versions.   Dale likes to build the classic big horse power 2wds and he has made 930 and 1030 Case tractors in narrow front, wide front, cab version and western style.

In  20 years of building farm tractors Dale Matsen has created many interesting 1/64 models.  These models are detailed models that show a great history of tractors in 1/64 scale.     Over the years Dale has enjoyed building Baker kits like the International 7488, Allis-Cahalmers 7580, 8550 and 4W-305 4wd tractors.  He also enjoys customizing grain trucks.

Jeremy Gustafson and Jason Lozmack

AGCO Deutz-Allis 9100 series

When The Toy Tractor Times reviewed Matsen minature Farms unique 1/64 tractors at the St. Louis toy show we met two of Dale's friends.  Jeremy Gustafson and Jason Lozmack were set up with Dale displaying their custom and scratch built work.

Jeremy like his friend Dale enjoys filling gaps in 1/64.  One of Jeremy's big projects has been building the Deutz-Allis 9100 series tractors in resin.  In the late 1980's after Deutz-Allis phased out the Allis-Chalmers 8000 series tractors the company knew it need a tractor line ranging from 130-200 hp.   Deutz-Allis turned to White and created the 9100 series.  White produced the new range of tractors in their cold Water, Ohio plant along side the White Work-Horse series.   The first 9100 tractors were offered in Deutz spring green.   In 1990 when AGCO formed the tractors were returned to the famous AC orange.  Because White was in such a close working relationship with Deutz building a common platform tractor, AGCO aquired the White-New Idea company.   Deutz-Allis 9100 and White tractor production was moved to the Independence, Missouri Gleaner plant.

Jeremy has always liked the White built 9100 series tractors.  Jeremy has built fwa and 2wd versions of the 9130, 9150, 9170 and 9190 tractors.   He has also honored the Deutz-Allis hertaige building both spring green and AGCO orange tractors.

Building tractors like the 9100's is fun but Jeremy also likes customizing existing tractors like the New Holland 8970 Genesis pictured below.  He also likes to build implements like plows and field cultivators.  If you would like to contact Jeremy by e-mail at jkgus@galynx.com

Jason Lozmack shares Dale Matsen's interest in Oliver tractors.   Jason has created some rare Olivers in 1/64.  A one of a kind Oliver that Jasoon has built a 1/64 880 Twin.  The double frame Oliver was built sometime 1958 and 1963 during the 880's production run at the Charles City, Iowa Oliver plant.   This one of a kind model appears in pictures as an industrial model pulling a sheeps foot roller.  The standard 880 offered 55 hp at the draw bar.  With twi 880 teamed together the 880 twin reached 110 hp.  Another rare Oliver Jason has made is the Oliver G-1355.   During the 1970's large Oliver tractors shared a common frame with Minneapolis-Moline tractors.  In the early 1970's Oliver offered the 2155 based on the Minneapolis-Moline G-1355 body.  In 1974 as the Minneapolis-Moline and Oliver brands were phased out to make way for the all new White Field-Boss line, the White Corporation sold the M-M G-1355 with the White name on the hood and oLiver decals on the side.

Dale, Jeremy and Jason have all added special 1/64  tractors to the farm toy hobby.   You can look for their work at shows like St. Louis and the National Farm Toy Show each year.
