1/64 Auger wagons Part 1
Well it’s that busy time of year again; the farmers are in the field harvesting crops and the National Toy Show is less than two weeks away. Since it is harvest season I thought I would write about a common piece of harvest equipment, the auger wagon or as some call it the grain cart. This will be a two part article with the first one taking a look at the Kinze 1/64 auger wagons and next month the Brent auger wagons.
Scale models first released the Kinze wagon in 1988 as a model 840. It had single tires and the first one had a solid auger that did not fold. They made this with ones stamped first edition on the auger and then ones that did not say anything. These did not come in package.

They also used this wagon to make a show edition in 1988 for the Kansas equipment dealers. I don’t know how many were made but they are not easy to find.

In 1990 Scale Models changed the auger so that it would fold in the middle like the real ones. The picture below shows the shelf edition with the old and new package variation.
In 1990 there was also a very limited Kinze wagon made to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kinze. It was chrome plated and is very hard to find!

Starting in 1990 Scale Models made the Kinze wagon for the Farm Progress Show. There was a different one made for 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 & 1994. As the picture below shows they all had different packages and they all had stickers on the inside of the wagon denoting what show they were made for.

In 1999 Scale Models again produced the wagons for the Farm Progress Show and continued through 2002.

In 1999 Scale Models came out with a Kinze that had duals on it and put it in a white box. This was made as a shelf edition and also a Farm Progress show edition for that year.

In 2000 they put the dual wheeled wagon in a package. At this time they also started the tracked version of the wagon.
They used the dual wheeled wagon to make Farm Progress Show variations for 2000, 2001 & 2002.

As I mentioned before in 2000 Scale Models started making the tracked version of the Auger wagon. However in the early 90’s Gottman Toys made some with tracks on them and put sof-trak decals on them. These came in white boxes and you can tell them apart because the tracks are all plastic and not as detailed.

Below is a picture of the shelf model Tracked version Kinze with several different package variations.

The tracked version was also made for the 2000, 2001 & 2002 Farm Progress Show.

In 2003 Danny Gottman with Spec Cast produced the new style model 1050 Kinze wagon with singles, duals, or tracks. You could also get all three in a set. These are very detailed.

Over the years Scale Models has also used the Kinze casting to make some generic wagons and put name on them. The early ones came in either a green, orange or red color and are very hard to find.

In 2003 they made a dualed version that came in cat yellow or Oliver green and a tracked version that came in cat yellow. These said 2003 JLE on the side.

Well that concludes this months article. Make sure to check out next months article on the Brent auger wagons. Did you know there have been 10 different Brent auger wagons made…….that does not include the gravity wagons. In the meantime have a great time at the Nationals and look me up. I will be set up inside a trailer west of the National Farm Toy Museum.
